Palermo, Sicily, Italy – September 30, 2024:
As the summer season draws to a close, Sicily is gearing up to offer a unique and immersive experience for travelers: a journey through time aboard its historic trains. For the sixth consecutive year, the Fondazione FS Italiane (FS Italiane Foundation) is partnering with the Sicilian Regional Department of Tourism, Sport and Entertainment to bring these vintage trains back to life.
From September 14th to December 8th, 2024, visitors can embark on 33 thematic journeys along the island's most scenic railway lines. These nostalgic train rides offer a chance to explore picturesque villages, archaeological parks, and art centers, all while enjoying the charm of vintage carriages.
One of the highlights of this year's program is the return of the legendary "terrazzini" carriages from the 1930s. These iconic carriages, known for their open-air platforms, provide a truly unique and romantic travel experience. Additionally, a baggage car equipped with bike racks will allow cycling enthusiasts to combine their train journey with active exploration of the surrounding countryside.
The destinations selected for this year's historic train tours showcase Sicily's rich cultural heritage. Agrigento, home to the Valley of the Temples, one of the world's most important archaeological sites, will be celebrated with a special anniversary commemorating 150 years since the inauguration of the Palermo-Porto Empedocle railway. Caltagirone, renowned for its traditional ceramics, will offer visitors a unique cultural experience. Siracusa and its enchanting island of Ortigia will transport travelers back to ancient Greek and Roman times, while Modica will delight with its Baroque architecture and annual Chocolate Festival.
Since the launch of these historic train tours in 2018, they have attracted over 20,000 tourists, with 7,400 participating in 2023 alone. This growing popularity demonstrates a strong interest in cultural and tourist initiatives that combine the charm of rail travel with the discovery of hidden gems. The data also shows a significant increase in tourist presences in Sicily during the September-December period, with foreign visitors accounting for a particularly large share of the growth.
A Glimpse into Sicily's Railway Past
The historic trains offer not only a delightful travel experience but also a glimpse into Sicily's railway past. The first railway line on the island was inaugurated in 1863, connecting Palermo and Bagheria. Over the years, Sicily's railway network underwent significant modernization, with the introduction of electric lines in the late 1940s. These advancements played a crucial role in the island's economic and social development.
By reviving these historic trains, Sicily is offering visitors a chance to travel the same routes that once played a vital role in the island's history and progress. It's an opportunity to experience the magic of rail travel and discover the hidden treasures of this beautiful region.
