Seattle, Washington, USA --- November 30, 2024:

Social media platform Bluesky is taking a tougher stance against impersonation and misleading accounts in a bid to clean up its platform. This comes after a recent surge in new users highlighted a vulnerability in Bluesky's verification system.

The platform previously allowed users to claim usernames, but this approach made it easy for imposters to create fake accounts mimicking real people or organizations. In response, Bluesky is now actively removing impersonator accounts and those "squatting" on usernames.

While Bluesky offers a verification method by linking an account to a domain name, the process isn't as simple as a paid checkmark.  To avoid confusion, parody, satire, and fan accounts will now be required to clearly label themselves in both their username and bio. Failure to do so will result in the account being treated as an impersonator and removed.

Bluesky is also taking steps to prevent "identity churning," where users create impersonator accounts to gain followers and then switch identities to avoid detection. These accounts will be banned from the platform.

The platform is working on improving its verification system but hasn't revealed details yet. These changes aim to create a safer and more transparent environment for Bluesky users.
