SAN FRANCISCO, USA – April 29, 2025:

OpenAI has unveiled a major update to its viral chatbot, ChatGPT, expanding its capabilities into the online shopping sphere. The new AI-driven shopping features allow users to access personalized product recommendations, view prices and reviews, and find direct links for purchasing — all within the ChatGPT interface.

The company clarified that selections made through ChatGPT are "chosen independently and are not ads," maintaining a neutral recommendation approach. This strategic move brings OpenAI into closer competition with tech giants like Amazon and Google, as well as major media sites known for product reviews.

Since launching its search tool last year, OpenAI has seen explosive growth, with over one billion web searches recorded in just the past week. Although Google continues to dominate global search traffic, capturing about 89%, its market share has been gradually declining, opening opportunities for emerging platforms like ChatGPT.

Amazon, already operating its own generative AI shopping assistant, and AI firm Perplexity, which has introduced a shopping tool, are among the competitors in this rapidly evolving space. OpenAI stated that the objective of the new feature is to make it "faster to find, compare, and buy products," with full availability rolling out over the next few days.

Additionally, OpenAI announced broader updates to its search product, including live sports score updates accessible through ChatGPT and the integration of multiple citations in its AI-generated answers — enhancing credibility and user trust.

With these new advancements, OpenAI is not just reshaping online search but also redefining how users experience shopping in the digital age, leveraging AI to simplify and personalize the consumer journey.
