Jakarta, Indonesia – May 8, 2025:

Bill Gates’ latest visit to Jakarta highlights a pivotal shift in how artificial intelligence (AI) is being positioned on the global development agenda — not as a threat, but as a powerful force for good. During a meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and leading philanthropists, the Microsoft co-founder underscored the transformative impact AI could have in sectors critical to human well-being: healthcare, education, and agriculture.

“AI is going to help us discover new tools,” Gates stated, adding that these technologies will enhance service delivery across health, learning, and agricultural systems. He expressed optimism that AI could accelerate disease eradication efforts, particularly against polio, measles, and malaria — campaigns he has long championed through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Since 2009, Gates has contributed over $159 million to Indonesia, mostly in support of its healthcare infrastructure and vaccine programs. His visit this week extended beyond meetings, including a stop at a Jakarta elementary school alongside President Prabowo to observe a free student meal program — a sign of Gates’ interest in supporting inclusive development at the grassroots level.

Prabowo, in recognition of Gates’ contributions to both Indonesia and global health, announced plans to award him the country’s highest civilian honor. The gesture comes as Indonesia ramps up its own technological ambitions, supported by major investments from Gates' former company.

In 2024, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella pledged $1.7 billion to strengthen Indonesia’s AI and cloud computing infrastructure. This investment is helping build local data centers, boost digital literacy, and prepare the nation for a more connected and resilient future.

As Indonesia positions itself as a regional tech hub in Southeast Asia, Gates’ visit sends a strong signal that partnerships between governments, philanthropies, and tech firms can drive innovation that is both ethical and equitable.

In an age of AI anxiety, Gates’ message is refreshingly clear: advanced technology, when aligned with humanitarian goals, can be a force for widespread social good — especially in the hands of nations ready to embrace inclusive innovation.
