Seoul, South Korea — May 16, 2025:

LG Electronics has marked a milestone in automotive technology by unveiling its next-generation Internet of Things - Non-Terrestrial Networks (IoT-NTN) solution at the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) conference held in Paris from May 12 to 15, 2025. The company conducted a live demonstration across the streets of Paris, showcasing a connected vehicle outfitted with IoT-NTN-enabled Telematics Control Units (TCUs), capable of uninterrupted, high-quality voice communication across both terrestrial (TN) and non-terrestrial (NTN) networks.

IoT-NTN is a cutting-edge communications system that integrates satellite links and high-altitude platforms to deliver connectivity where conventional 3G, 4G, and 5G networks cannot reach. This is especially crucial in remote environments such as oceans, deserts, and mountainous regions, as well as during natural disasters when ground infrastructure is compromised. The technology supports essential features like autonomous driving, real-time tracking, remote vehicle control, and emergency communications.

Taking the innovation further, LG has embedded AI-powered voice compression into its IoT-NTN solution. This reduces data load dramatically, allowing voice messages to be sent over satellite at speeds over ten times faster than before. What was once limited to basic emergency texts now supports two-way, real-time voice conversations. During emergencies, a simple button press sends a voice-based distress call, eliminating the need for manual text input and enabling faster responses.

The live demonstration at the 5GAA event involved transitioning seamlessly between TN and NTN zones. Attendees experienced the system firsthand, exchanging voice messages from one network type to another without loss in quality. Supporting this is LG’s new cloud-based platform that extends satellite communication capabilities and bridges them with terrestrial networks to create a seamless user experience.

According to internal data informed by Strategy Analytics, LG led the global telematics market in the past year with a 24.4 percent share. The company is also advancing Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication and in-vehicle infotainment systems—key enablers for software-defined vehicles and next-gen mobility.

A founding member of the 5GAA since 2016, LG continues to collaborate with over 110 industry leaders, including automakers, telecom firms, and chipset manufacturers, to drive connected mobility innovation forward.

“Our IoT-NTN technology represents a leap forward for seamless, reliable connectivity for vehicles in the most remote or challenging environments,” said Lee Sang-yong, head of the VS R&D Laboratory at LG Vehicle Solution Company. “By enabling real-time voice communication via satellite, we’re not only enhancing driver safety but laying the groundwork for the future of global mobility.”
