GENEVA, Switzerland – May 17, 2025:

SGS has received official approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to expand its role as a recognized third-party certification body for the Energy Star program, focusing on medical imaging equipment. This approval, granted on April 3, 2025, authorizes SGS to conduct testing and certification of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines under the Energy Star label, a mark of superior energy efficiency.

The Energy Star certification helps manufacturers demonstrate that their devices consume less energy both in ready-to-scan mode and during automated power-down to an energy-saving low power state. Devices bearing the blue Energy Star label allow consumers and healthcare providers to easily identify products that reduce energy consumption and lower operational costs without compromising performance.

Ana Ruas, Certification Manager for Connectivity & Products at SGS, highlighted the significance of this accreditation: “This recognition strengthens our ability to support medical device manufacturers and retailers dedicated to developing energy-efficient equipment. It’s a milestone for our team and will accelerate sustainability and innovation within the medical technology industry.”

Since its inception in 1992, the Energy Star program and its partners have helped save 5 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity, avoid over $500 billion in energy costs, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 4 billion metric tons across the United States.

In addition to Energy Star certification, SGS is recognized as a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) by OSHA and accredited by the Standards Council of Canada, offering safety and regulatory compliance certification services for medical devices worldwide. SGS's global expertise also supports compliance with regulations like the Medical Device Regulation (MDR 2017/745), ensuring medical devices meet stringent international standards.

This development marks a significant step forward in advancing energy efficiency in healthcare technology, underscoring SGS’s commitment to sustainability and regulatory excellence in the medical device sector.
