OLATHE, USA — July 16, 2025:

Garmin has introduced the Descent S1 Smart Buoy, a significant advancement in dive technology aimed at improving underwater safety, communication, and diver tracking. Designed to work in tandem with Garmin’s Descent dive computers and the SubWave sonar network, the buoy allows surface crews to monitor and maintain communication with up to eight divers at once.

The Descent S1 enables real-time diver tracking, including data such as tank pressure, location, and depth, with automated alerts when critical thresholds—like low air supply—are reached. Divers can send preset messages to the surface to report their position, status, or any changes in their dive plan. In return, surface crews can issue messages or diver recalls directly to those underwater. The buoy also enhances diver-to-diver messaging underwater, extending the communication range up to 100 meters for users equipped with compatible Garmin devices.

Navigation is another standout feature. Divers can view the direction and distance to the buoy, helping them return safely whether it’s tethered to a boat, anchored, or drifting. After the dive, users can access heatmaps and track their dive paths using the Garmin Dive mobile app, offering insights into their underwater exploration.

The compact buoy weighs just 2 pounds and is built for durability, with an IPX8 water rating up to 10 meters. Its rechargeable lithium battery delivers up to 15 hours of operation, supporting multiple dives on a single charge. With Wi-Fi connectivity up to 60 meters, it links directly to the Garmin Dive app for easy data review and configuration.

Susan Lyman, Vice President of Consumer Sales and Marketing at Garmin, described the product as a breakthrough in diver safety. “Garmin is focused on creating essential products designed to help keep divers safe. The groundbreaking Descent S1 Buoy adds game-changing communication, navigation, and safety capabilities between divers and their surface crew, making it a must-have for dive teams, charter operations, instructors, and more,” she said.

The Descent S1 Smart Buoy is now available with a suggested retail price of $2,499.99. Garmin, known for its innovations across adventure, marine, and fitness technologies, continues to expand its presence in underwater safety with tools that help divers and surface teams stay connected and informed.

Some features may vary depending on dive computer model. Performance may be affected by environmental conditions.
