Johannesburg, South Africa — August 22, 2025:

In a spectacular demonstration of strength and innovation, two Chery TIGGO9 flagship SUVs underwent a challenging 50% offset frontal collision test at 50 km/h in South Africa on August 20, 2025. The high-impact test, conducted on a long stretch of asphalt, highlighted the vehicle’s exceptional safety features, solidifying Chery’s reputation for cutting-edge automotive engineering.

When the two SUVs collided head-on, the results were striking: both vehicles’ cabins remained completely intact, with no deformation to the A, B, or C pillars. In addition, all airbags, including the driver and front passenger airbags, knee airbags, and side curtain airbags, deployed instantly. The seatbelt pretensioners engaged right away, all doors opened normally, and there was no sign of fuel leakage. The hazard lights automatically flashed to alert nearby drivers, ensuring a thorough safety response.

Chery’s commitment to superior safety is evident in the TIGGO9’s design, which incorporates 85% high-strength steel, including 21% hot-rolled steel rated at 1500 MPa in critical areas such as the A and B pillars. The vehicle’s front structure boasts dual aluminum crash beams that span 85% of the vehicle’s width, complemented by six specially designed crash boxes that effectively absorb and dissipate impact energy.

The TIGGO9 is also equipped with 10 airbags, a particularly long 2,060 mm side curtain airbag that maintains over 50% pressure for six seconds post-deployment, and a central airbag between the front seats to mitigate secondary impacts. These advanced features combine to offer a level of protection rarely seen in the SUV segment, setting a new benchmark for safety.

This successful collision test is part of Chery’s ongoing commitment to comprehensive safety testing, which spans six key safety aspects across various global markets, including Indonesia and Mexico. As the first Chinese automaker to export five million vehicles, Chery’s recognition in the Fortune Global 500 underscores the company’s relentless focus on global quality and its long-standing dedication to driver and passenger safety.

That evening, the TIGGO9 made its official debut in the South African market, further cementing Chery’s presence in Africa. The following day, Chery also partnered with UNICEF to host the “Supporting Education in Africa” forum, announcing plans to fund the construction of Hope Primary Schools. This initiative is part of Chery’s broader social responsibility efforts, which reflect its “In Africa, for Africa” philosophy.

As Chery continues to build on its legacy of quality and safety, the brand remains committed to creating sustainable, secure driving experiences for consumers around the world, while addressing key social challenges in the regions where it operates.
