Accidentally spilling water on your laptop can be a stressful experience, but knowing what to do immediately can help you avoid significant damage and potentially save your device. Many people panic and make mistakes in the heat of the moment, but with the right steps, your laptop might still be salvaged.
The first and most important thing to remember is to never turn on your laptop if it’s wet. While it may be tempting to check if the device still works, powering it up can cause a short circuit, further damaging the internal components. Instead, turn it off immediately. If it’s charging, unplug the charger to prevent electrical damage. If you own an older laptop with a removable battery, take it out. For newer models with built-in batteries, skip this step and take your device to a service center as soon as possible.
Disconnect any plugged-in devices, such as USB drives, mice, headphones, or external storage, to prevent damage to those accessories. Once you’ve done that, carefully turn the laptop upside down in a 'V' shape, with the screen facing upward and the keyboard facing down. This will help any excess water drain out of the device.
