LAS VEGAS, UNITED STATES — December 9, 2025:

Blue Origin, the space exploration company founded by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, is exploring an innovative solution to one of the moon’s biggest challenges: surviving the extreme conditions of the lunar night. At Amazon’s Reinvent 2025 conference, the company demonstrated an AI-driven device capable of converting lunar dust into a usable energy source for rockets and other equipment on the moon.

Developed in collaboration with startup Istari Digital, the device collects moon dust and extracts heat from it, effectively transforming the regolith into a battery-like energy source. According to Istari CEO Will Roper, this technology could allow rockets to generate energy directly on the lunar surface, reducing reliance on fuel transported from Earth and enabling longer-duration missions.

The technology addresses a fundamental obstacle in lunar exploration: the moon’s two-week-long nights. Each lunar day lasts approximately 28 Earth days, with around 14 days of continuous sunlight followed by 14 days of darkness. During the lunar night, temperatures drop drastically, rendering many spacecraft components inoperable. By converting lunar dust into a self-sufficient energy source, Blue Origin aims to ensure rockets and equipment remain functional regardless of sunlight availability.

This approach represents a significant step in in-situ resource utilization (ISRU), a strategy in space exploration that leverages local materials to support human activity. By generating power from the lunar surface itself, Blue Origin could reduce mission costs and logistical complexity, while enabling extended stays and scientific research on the moon.

The AI-based system also highlights the growing role of autonomous technologies in space. By optimizing energy extraction from lunar dust with minimal human intervention, the device is designed to function reliably under the harsh and variable conditions of the lunar environment, including extreme temperature swings and surface radiation.

If successful, this technology could redefine the economics and feasibility of lunar missions. Generating energy directly from the moon itself not only mitigates the challenges of long lunar nights but also opens possibilities for using lunar resources as fuel for rockets and other exploration vehicles. While further testing and refinement are needed to scale the technology for practical missions, Blue Origin’s innovation demonstrates a forward-looking approach to sustained human and robotic presence beyond Earth.
