Instagram’s decision to limit public posts and reels to a maximum of five hashtags marks one of the platform’s most direct interventions yet in how content is discovered. Announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, the new rule challenges a long-standing creator strategy built around volume, signaling that relevance now outweighs reach-seeking tactics that rely on mass tagging.
Since hashtags were introduced on Instagram in 2011, they have evolved from a simple discovery tool into a widely exploited growth mechanism. Users were previously allowed to include up to 30 hashtags per post, encouraging the widespread use of generic, high-traffic tags such as #reels, #viral or #explore. According to Instagram, this practice has diluted the value of hashtags, often confusing recommendation systems rather than helping content reach the right audience.
By capping hashtags at five, Instagram is attempting to curb what it describes as “engagement hacking”—the artificial inflation of views and interactions through excessive or irrelevant tagging. Mosseri has emphasized that using fewer, highly relevant hashtags allows the algorithm to better understand what a post is about, improving the chances that it will be shown to users with genuine interest in that topic.
