With the introduction of the “Silence Unknown Callers” feature, the Meta-owned platform is signaling a clear shift toward greater user control and digital safety.
The problem is rooted in WhatsApp’s open architecture. Unlike traditional phone networks, anyone with a mobile number can place a WhatsApp call, making the platform vulnerable to spam, telemarketing, and fraud attempts. As usage has expanded globally, so has abuse of this accessibility, prompting calls for stronger safeguards.
The new silencing feature offers a practical middle ground. When enabled, calls from numbers that are not saved in a user’s contacts and have no prior interaction will no longer ring.
