In response, Google has enhanced its Gmail app to support up to five email accounts at once — including services beyond its own ecosystem.

The Gmail app no longer serves solely as a gateway to Google-based email addresses. Users can seamlessly integrate third-party services such as Outlook, iCloud Mail, and Yahoo Mail directly within the mobile application.

To add an account, users tap the profile icon in the top-right corner of the Gmail app and select “Add another account.” Gmail addresses are added by choosing “Google,” while other providers can be selected from the available list. The system then guides users through a secure sign-in process, including two-step verification where applicable.

Industry observers note that this open-platform strategy reflects a broader trend in the technology sector: major platforms are prioritizing integration and convenience over exclusivity to retain user engagement.

For email providers not listed in Gmail’s default options, users can manually configure accounts using IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol). By selecting “Other” and choosing “Personal (IMAP),” users can input server details such as address, port number, and security settings.

Although this setup requires technical information from the email service provider, it significantly broadens compatibility. This flexibility is particularly valuable for businesses and professionals using custom domain emails or regional providers.

A standout feature of the Gmail app is the “All Inboxes” view. By selecting this option from the side menu, users can see emails from all connected accounts in a single consolidated list.

This unified approach minimizes the need to switch between accounts and enhances productivity — a crucial advantage in fast-paced work environments across cities like New York, London, and Mumbai, where professionals often manage multiple digital identities.
