In a landmark trial, a jury has signaled that Meta and YouTube could face liability for allegedly enabling addictive behavior in a young user. The indication came after jurors asked the judge about calculating damages—typically a step considered only after responsibility has been established.
The development, while not a verdict, suggests the panel may already be leaning toward finding fault in how these platforms are designed. Legal experts say such a shift could have sweeping implications, potentially influencing hundreds of similar lawsuits across the United States.
At the center of the case is a 20-year-old California woman who testified that prolonged exposure to Instagram and YouTube from early childhood contributed to depression and suicidal thoughts.
