Lawsuit Against xAI, SpaceX Data Center Noise in Mississippi!

A class-action lawsuit against xAI and SpaceX claims a Mississippi data center power plant has subjected thousands of residents to constant noise, raising fresh questions about the hidden costs of the AI boom.

Tech Desk — June 10, 2026:

The rapid growth of artificial intelligence is creating new challenges far beyond the technology sector, and a lawsuit in Mississippi is becoming one of the latest examples.

Residents near xAI-linked facilities in Southaven have filed a class-action lawsuit against xAI and SpaceX, alleging that a power plant supporting nearby data centers has exposed them to constant and unavoidable noise. The plaintiffs claim the disturbance has affected their health, disrupted daily life, and reduced property values.

The case was made public this week in federal court in Oxford, Mississippi. Three residents brought the lawsuit on behalf of what could become a class of more than 10,000 people living in the affected area.

According to the complaint, gas-fired turbines powering data center operations run continuously, producing noise and vibrations that residents describe as impossible to escape. The lawsuit argues that the companies failed to adequately address the problem and created a public nuisance for surrounding communities.

The legal action reflects a growing debate over the real-world impact of artificial intelligence infrastructure. While AI companies are racing to build larger and more powerful systems, those systems require enormous amounts of electricity and computing capacity. That demand has fueled a wave of new data center construction across the United States.

For local residents, however, the conversation is increasingly shifting away from AI innovation and toward quality-of-life concerns. The plaintiffs argue that their homes, which should provide peace and comfort, have instead become places where industrial noise is a constant presence.

The lawsuit seeks damages for emotional distress, loss of property value, and other alleged harms. It also asks the court to require the companies to surrender an unspecified portion of profits linked to the operation.

Neither xAI nor SpaceX immediately responded to requests for comment following the filing. An xAI subsidiary, MZX Tech, is also listed as a defendant. Elon Musk himself is not named in the lawsuit.

The case arrives at a sensitive moment for xAI's Mississippi operations. Earlier this year, the NAACP filed a separate lawsuit accusing the company of violating environmental regulations related to the same facilities. That case remains ongoing.

Adding to the significance of the dispute, the U.S. Department of Justice recently signaled that it may become involved in the environmental case. Federal officials indicated that the matter raises broader legal and policy questions surrounding the government's role in supporting and regulating AI infrastructure.

The controversy also carries political implications. Mississippi officials have promoted xAI's multibillion-dollar investment as a major economic opportunity capable of bringing jobs and technology development to the region.

Yet the lawsuit highlights the balancing act facing governments across the country. Communities often welcome investment and economic growth, but residents also expect protections against environmental and quality-of-life impacts that can accompany large industrial projects.

As artificial intelligence continues to expand, conflicts like the one unfolding in Southaven may become increasingly common. The outcome could help shape how future AI infrastructure projects are developed, regulated, and integrated into the communities where they operate.

For now, a dispute that began with complaints about noise is evolving into a broader conversation about who bears the costs of America's accelerating AI revolution.
