MENLO PARK, California, USA — April 30, 2025:
Meta Platforms has entered the competitive generative AI space with the launch of a standalone AI app powered by its latest Llama 4 model. Designed to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the new Meta AI app adds a unique social dimension by integrating features from the company’s social media platforms.
The app introduces a “Discover” feed, allowing users to view how others interact with AI in real time—mirroring the original concept of Facebook’s News Feed but reimagined for artificial intelligence. It also includes voice interaction capabilities and enables account linking with Facebook and Instagram for seamless personalization.
“It’s smart for Meta to differentiate its ChatGPT competitor by drawing from the company’s social media roots,” said Forrester research director Mike Proulx. “The app’s Discover feed is like a version of the OG Facebook Feed, but only focused on AI use cases.”
Unlike many of its competitors, Meta has committed to an open-source approach with its Llama models. The company reports that more than one billion people are already engaging with Meta’s AI tools across its ecosystem each month.
The announcement was made during LlamaCon, Meta’s first developer conference focused on AI, held at its headquarters in Menlo Park, California. The event featured a keynote discussion between Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, offering a candid look into the current pace of AI development and how the technology is transforming their organizations and the broader economy.
Zuckerberg acknowledged that while much of the current attention around AI is hype-driven, the real measure of progress will be in long-term productivity gains. “If this is going to lead to massive increases in productivity, that needs to be reflected in major increases in GDP,” he said, noting that true transformation will take years.
Nadella compared the challenge of integrating AI to the industrial revolution sparked by electricity, stating that it took decades for businesses to restructure operations around the new technology. “AI has the promise, but now we have to make it deliver real change in productivity—and that requires not only software but management transformation,” he said.
Zuckerberg replied optimistically, “We’re all investing as if it’s not going to take 50 years, so I hope it doesn’t take 50 years.”
The launch of Meta’s AI app underscores the company’s broader push to integrate AI more deeply into the user experience, distinguishing itself from rivals through open access, real-time social features, and platform-wide personalization. As the global AI race accelerates, Meta’s unique blend of social integration and technical openness could position it as a formidable player in the next phase of digital innovation.
