Dhaka, Bangladesh — May 30, 2025:
Severe storms and related power outages have left over 5,900 telecommunication sites across Bangladesh offline, causing widespread disruption to communication services throughout the country. The outages are attributed to intense rainfall, tidal surges, and power supply interruptions linked to a persistent low-pressure weather system.
Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor on ICT Affairs, confirmed the extensive network disruptions in a Facebook update on Friday. He explained that the telecommunications infrastructure has suffered significant damage due to the extreme weather conditions, while ongoing power failures have further incapacitated critical sites.
“The telecom sector is facing major challenges as natural disasters impact both network infrastructure and electricity supply,” Taiyeb said. He also assured that telecom providers, alongside power companies such as Palli Vidyut, are working around the clock to restore service as swiftly as possible.
The hardest-hit regions include Barisal, Sylhet South, Tangail, Chandpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka North, Comilla, Noakhali, and Chittagong South. In these areas, the scale of offline sites has severely affected connectivity for millions of users.
This incident highlights the vulnerability of Bangladesh’s telecommunication networks to extreme weather events and underscores the critical need for enhanced infrastructure resilience and disaster preparedness to protect essential communication services moving forward.
