Greek woman uses ChatGPT to interpret coffee grounds and accuses husband of infidelity, filing for divorce in a case raising questions about AI’s real-life impact. |
Athens, Greece – May 11, 2025:
In a highly unusual case blending ancient superstition with cutting-edge technology, a Greek woman has filed for divorce after claiming ChatGPT revealed her husband’s alleged infidelity through a digital reading of coffee grounds.
According to Greek City Times, the woman, married for over 12 years and mother of two, submitted images of coffee cup residue—hers and her husband’s—to the AI chatbot, requesting a modern take on tasseography, the centuries-old practice of interpreting coffee grounds to foresee one’s future.
The AI-generated interpretation reportedly stunned her. ChatGPT allegedly suggested that her husband was romantically involved with a younger woman determined to separate their family. The reading went so far as to mention that his “destined partner” had a name beginning with the letter “E.” Her own reading, meanwhile, indicated betrayal and emotional discord at home.
While the woman took the AI’s reading seriously, her husband reacted with disbelief. “I laughed it off as nonsense. But she took it seriously. She asked me to leave, told our kids we were getting divorced, and then I got a call from a lawyer,” he told a local television outlet. “That’s when I realized it wasn’t a joke.”
Within three days, she filed for formal divorce, refusing any talks of reconciliation or mutual settlement.
The husband’s attorney emphasized that AI-generated readings hold no legal value and claimed the wife had a history of following mystical guidance. He cited an earlier instance where she relied heavily on astrological advice for nearly a year. “He is innocent until proven otherwise, and AI interpretations are not admissible in court,” the lawyer said.
The case has stirred intense public debate across Greek social media, highlighting the growing influence of artificial intelligence in personal and emotional decisions. Legal experts have been quick to caution that AI-driven forecasts or divinations are not legally recognized as evidence under current Greek law.
While the story may seem like satire, it underscores a broader societal shift where individuals are increasingly turning to AI not only for information—but also for personal validation, spiritual insight, and life-altering decisions.
