Hong Kong, China – May 23, 2025:
The City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) inaugurated the HK Tech 300 Expo from May 23 to 24, 2025, hosting nearly 300 start-ups on its Kowloon Tong campus. The event celebrated the university’s strides in entrepreneurship and innovation, translating academic research into practical solutions with far-reaching social and economic impacts.
Spanning two days, the Expo featured over 60 roadshows where start-up founders presented cutting-edge innovations in biotech and health, AI and ICT, advanced technology and ESG, and fintech. The exhibition demonstrated how CityUHK’s research ecosystem fosters real-world applications, promoting sustainable growth and technological advancement.
Coinciding with the Expo, CityUHK launched the HK Tech 300 International Start-up Competition, signaling a bold expansion of the university's flagship entrepreneurial initiative onto the global stage. The competition aims to facilitate cross-border collaboration, foster global talent, and bring innovative solutions to market.
Officiating the ceremonies were Professor Sun Dong, JP, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry of the HKSAR Government; Mr Michael Ngai, Council Chairman of CityUHK; Mr Charles Chin Ying-on, Treasurer of CityUHK; and Professor Freddy Boey, President of CityUHK. Also in attendance were Mr Chaturont Chaiyakam, Consul-General of Thailand, and Mrs Le Duc Hanh, Consul-General of Vietnam, alongside officials from 12 mainland Chinese cities.
Launched in 2021, HK Tech 300 has emerged as CityUHK’s flagship program, nurturing over 900 start-ups, with more than 200 securing up to HK$1 million in angel funding. The program’s comprehensive support includes business matching, co-investment opportunities, access to patent resources, and mentorship from a network of 250+ industry experts, in partnership with 100+ public and private organizations.
Having extended its reach to mainland China in 2022 and Southeast Asia in 2023, CityUHK now introduces the HK Tech 300 International Competition in collaboration with 11 global universities and five institutional partners across nine countries and regions: Brunei, Hungary, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam, and the Hong Kong SAR.
The competition seeks to attract global talent to Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area by leveraging the city’s role as a leading hub for innovation, finance, and entrepreneurship. As CityUHK continues to champion research commercialization and social impact, the HK Tech 300 initiative stands as a model of academic-industry synergy with global resonance.
