Dhaka, Bangladesh — May 13, 2025:

Bangladesh's National Identity Card (NID) services have been suspended across the country due to a technical glitch in the one-time password (OTP) system, the Election Commission (EC) announced on Tuesday morning.

ASM Humayun Kabir, Director General of the National Identity Registration Division, confirmed that the issue is preventing staff from logging into the NID server. “After entering the user ID and password, a one-time password is required to complete login. That OTP is currently not being generated, so no one can access the system,” he stated.

Kabir clarified that the server itself remains functional, but the malfunction lies with the OTP system managed by the external service provider tasked with supporting the EC’s digital operations. “This is not a server-side problem. The error is within the OTP service infrastructure. The provider is working to resolve it,” he said.

As a result, all NID-related services—such as new registrations, corrections, and reissues—are currently unavailable. No official timeline has been shared for when full operations will resume, but efforts are underway to fix the OTP error and restore access as soon as possible.

The temporary disruption impacts citizens nationwide and underscores the critical role of secure, reliable IT infrastructure in delivering essential government services.
