Geneva, Switzerland – May 29, 2025:
SGS North America Inc. has announced a significant global expansion of its Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) network following formal approval from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). This accreditation, effective January 22, 2025, allows SGS to test and certify products intended for the U.S. market at five newly designated NRTL facilities located in Brussels, Belgium; Puchheim, Germany; Yokohama, Japan; Gyeonggi-do, Korea; and New Taipei City, Taiwan (China).
In addition to the geographic expansion, SGS has also been granted the authority to include the ASME A17.5 standard—specific to elevator and escalator electrical equipment—within its testing capabilities. This broadens the scope of compliance services SGS offers and strengthens its position as a key player in workplace safety certification.
John Ciliege, Global Head of NRTL at SGS, expressed pride in the achievement, stating that the recognition from OSHA is a testament to the dedication and technical excellence of the company’s global laboratory teams. He emphasized that the expansion enables SGS to provide more localized, efficient services to international clients aiming to access North American markets while demonstrating a strong commitment to product safety.
OSHA, a division of the United States Department of Labor, operates the NRTL program to ensure that specific types of equipment meet rigorous safety standards before they are permitted for use in American workplaces. Products certified through SGS's NRTL program are authorized to carry the SGS North America Mark—a visible assurance of compliance and reliability for manufacturers, regulators, suppliers, and consumers.
SGS offers a full suite of testing and certification services for a wide array of electrical and electronic equipment, including IT devices, audio-visual systems, wireless technologies, household appliances, lighting, medical devices, and other consumer and industrial electronics. The company’s rigorous testing protocols ensure that certified products meet the highest levels of quality and safety.
As the world's leading Testing, Inspection, and Certification company, SGS operates a vast network of over 2,500 laboratories and offices across 115 countries, employing nearly 100,000 professionals. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, SGS has been a trusted name in quality assurance for over 145 years, consistently delivering precision, compliance, and sustainability.
With this latest expansion, SGS reinforces its global reputation for excellence and strengthens its ability to serve international manufacturers who require swift, compliant access to the U.S. marketplace. The company’s brand promise, “When you need to be sure,” reflects its enduring commitment to reliability, integrity, and global safety standards.
