SPEARFISH, South Dakota, USA — June 14, 2025:
Black Hills State University (BHSU) in Spearfish has been officially designated as a Purple Heart University, becoming the second institution in South Dakota to earn this prestigious honor. The recognition, awarded in appreciation of the university’s enduring support for U.S. military veterans wounded or killed in action, was presented by Major John Lundeen during the inauguration of BHSU President Steve Elliott on April 11.
“Being recognized as a Purple Heart Campus is a true honor for the university in many ways,” said Scott Hanson, business manager of Facilities Services. “It shows the commitment the university has in supporting our veterans and the commitment the veterans have shown. We have numerous Purple Heart Warriors in our community, and this shows that their heroism is truly appreciated in every way possible.”
BHSU’s long-standing relationship with the military dates back to World War II, when it hosted the Army Air Forces 93rd College Training Detachment—training over 1,000 cadets on its campus. It remains the only South Dakota institution to have participated in that national defense program. Today, BHSU is home to over 130 student veterans.
As part of its efforts to support and recognize veterans, BHSU has designated two reserved parking spaces on campus for Purple Heart recipients—one located near the Student Union and another adjacent to the Donald E. Young Sports & Fitness Center. Two additional spaces are also reserved for other veterans. The parking access is extended to all eligible individuals, regardless of university enrollment.
“As a retired veteran, I deeply respect the sacrifices these Purple Heart recipients have made and am proud to work at a university that supports our veterans,” said Deborah Liddick, assistant director of Facilities Services.
The Purple Heart University designation reflects BHSU’s historical and ongoing dedication to military service members, reinforcing its identity as a campus community that honors valor, sacrifice, and public service.
