Dhaka, Bangladesh, June 24, 2025:

Google Pay, the globally recognized digital payments platform, was officially launched in Bangladesh on Tuesday, marking a major milestone in the country’s digital finance journey.

At a formal ceremony held at a hotel in Dhaka, Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H Mansur inaugurated the service, positioning Bangladesh as a new entrant into Google’s growing network of fintech-enabled economies. The launch reflects the country’s strategic shift toward cashless transactions and financial innovation.

City Bank Plc is spearheading the rollout of Google Pay in Bangladesh in partnership with Google, with support from international payment giants Mastercard and Visa. Initially, the service is available exclusively to City Bank Plc cardholders, who can use Google Pay for purchases at authorized retail outlets, mobile app subscriptions, and in-app payments.

"This marks a major step in our journey toward a cashless society," said Governor Mansur, highlighting the role of technology in modernizing the financial system. He emphasized that such innovations would boost transparency, security, and convenience for both consumers and businesses.

The launch event was attended by Tracey Ann Jacobson, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka, and Hossain Khaled, Vice Chairman of City Bank, along with other distinguished guests. Their presence underscored the growing collaboration between the financial sector and global tech leaders in advancing Bangladesh’s digital economy.

With Google Pay now live, Bangladesh joins a growing list of countries leveraging mobile-first solutions to increase financial inclusion and transactional efficiency. As adoption expands beyond City Bank in the future, the platform is expected to enhance everyday commerce, reduce dependency on cash, and align with the government’s vision of a smart digital Bangladesh.
