Tech Desk — August 15, 2025:
In a bid to enhance user privacy and data management, Gemini Apps has launched a series of new features, including Temporary Chats and updated data controls. These updates, designed to give users more autonomy over their interactions with the platform, will roll out in the coming days.
The standout feature of this update is Temporary Chats, allowing users to initiate short-term conversations with Gemini that are not stored for future use or model training. These chats will not appear in Recent Chats or Gemini Apps Activity, ensuring that your interactions remain private. Temporary Chats will be stored for 72 hours for safety and response purposes before being deleted automatically.
This feature gives users an additional layer of control over how their data is managed while providing a seamless experience for one-off interactions without long-term data retention.
Another major update involves data handling practices. Gemini Apps is renaming its Gemini Apps Activity setting to “Keep Activity”. This new setting will enable users to retain and access past chats in Recent Chats and resume conversations at any time. However, starting September 2, uploaded files, photos, videos, and screens shared with Gemini will be used to improve Google’s services for everyone, including enhancing AI models.
Users have the option to turn off Keep Activity at any point, providing more flexibility in managing their data. The new system will allow users to manage and delete their activity whenever they choose, providing complete transparency and control over their content.
Alongside these changes, Gemini Apps is introducing a new setting that allows users to opt-in to share Gemini audio and Gemini Live recordings to help improve Google services. Gemini audio refers to recordings made when using the microphone button, while Gemini Live recordings include videos and screenshares. This new setting, designed to enhance service quality, will be turned off by default but can be activated by the user at any time.
Google reassured users that all data shared for service improvement will be handled with the utmost privacy and security. While human reviewers assist with training AI models, all chats are anonymized and disconnected from user accounts before being sent to external service providers. Google continues to prioritize privacy and adheres to its Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy to ensure responsible data use.
With these updates, Gemini Apps is reinforcing its commitment to providing users with the tools they need to manage their data and privacy. For more detailed information, users can visit the Gemini Apps Privacy Notice and Privacy Hub.
