Barcelona, Spain — March 7, 2025:

Huawei Digital Power has achieved a major milestone in the energy storage industry with its Smart String & Grid Forming Energy Storage System (ESS) passing the Extreme Ignition Test. Supervised by customers and the globally recognized independent risk management organization DNV, this test validates the system's safety capabilities under severe conditions, marking a breakthrough in energy storage technology.

In alignment with the international UL 9540A safety standard, the test involved subjecting the ESS to thermal runaway in multiple cells, a known risk for energy storage systems. However, Huawei's innovative design allowed the ESS to handle extreme conditions effectively, preventing fire or explosion even when 12 cells experienced thermal runaway. The system’s unique safety features, including a positive pressure oxygen barrier and a directed smoke exhaust channel, successfully contained the release of flammable gases, ensuring the integrity of the system.

The test was conducted in real-world conditions, with all four ESS containers charged to 100% state of charge (SOC) and operated without manual intervention. This approach ensured the most realistic testing environment possible, which further demonstrated the resilience of Huawei’s ESS. Even when the thermal runaway risk was escalated, the temperature in neighboring containers only reached 47°C, significantly below the thermal runaway threshold.

Huawei’s Smart String & Grid Forming ESS set itself apart from traditional energy storage systems by offering a slow ignition progression, delaying fire ignition for seven hours in extreme scenarios. This crucial delay provides valuable time for emergency responders to act, minimizing risks to both people and property.

This success highlights Huawei Digital Power’s leadership in advancing safety standards in the renewable energy sector. With its comprehensive safety features, the Smart String & Grid Forming ESS sets new benchmarks for the energy storage industry, ensuring a safer, more reliable energy future.
