Google has announced a strategic partnership with Elementl Power to develop three advanced nuclear power plants in the United States, each projected to deliver 600 megawatts of carbon-free electricity. This move marks a significant milestone in Google's effort to power its artificial intelligence-driven infrastructure with sustainable and scalable energy solutions.
Revealed on Wednesday, the collaboration highlights Google’s increasing reliance on nuclear energy to meet soaring demand for power generated by AI applications. While the total investment amount remains undisclosed, the tech giant's commitment underscores a growing trend among data-heavy companies seeking stable, zero-emission electricity sources.
“Our collaboration with Elementl Power enhances our ability to move at the speed required to meet this moment of AI and American innovation,” said Amanda Peterson Corio, Global Head of Data Center Energy at Google.
Chris Colbert, Chairman and CEO of Elementl Power, added, “We look forward to working with Google to execute these projects and bring safe, carbon-free, baseload electricity to the grid.”
Founded in 2022, Elementl Power specializes in next-generation nuclear energy systems. The two companies plan to coordinate with public utilities and regulated power providers to identify additional sites for future nuclear development.
The rising demand for AI computing has intensified pressure on energy grids across the U.S., prompting a reevaluation of how tech infrastructure is powered. In 2023, 25 U.S. states passed legislation to promote advanced nuclear energy, and over 200 nuclear-related bills were introduced in state legislatures in 2024 alone, according to the Nuclear Energy Institute.
Google is not alone in this pursuit. Amazon declared in October its support for small modular reactors (SMRs), while Microsoft is working with Constellation Energy to restart the decommissioned Three Mile Island facility — the site of America’s most severe nuclear incident in 1979 — to supply its data centers with power.
Although nuclear is taking center stage, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon continue to diversify their energy portfolios with wind and solar investments, reinforcing their shared commitment to decarbonization.
As AI drives explosive growth in energy demand, nuclear energy is emerging as a key pillar in the digital future — balancing innovation with environmental responsibility.
