SAN FRANCISCO, USA — May 18, 2025:

OpenAI has officially launched GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini on its ChatGPT platform, delivering significant improvements in processing speed, reasoning capability, and software development performance. The rollout, announced on X (formerly Twitter), is now live for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers, while free users also gain access to the lighter GPT-4.1 mini variant.

This new model replaces GPT-4.0 mini, offering a more streamlined and efficient user experience. GPT-4.1 first became available to developers through OpenAI's API in April 2024, but its full integration into ChatGPT marks a broader milestone in user access to advanced AI tools.

Shaokyi Amdo, an OpenAI spokesperson, highlighted the model’s enhanced capabilities, noting substantial gains in tasks like code writing and debugging. GPT-4.1 is also better at following detailed instructions and handling more complex reasoning tasks, further refining what users can expect in terms of reliability and performance. Compared to GPT-4o, the model demonstrates notable improvements in AI-driven productivity tools.

However, the launch has not been without scrutiny. Critics raised concerns about the absence of a formal safety report, a document that typically accompanies major AI releases from OpenAI. In response, the company clarified that GPT-4.1 is not considered a “frontier model” and therefore does not meet the threshold requiring a full transparency report.

Johannes Heidecke, OpenAI’s Head of Safety Systems, explained that the new version does not introduce novel capabilities or exceed the intelligence of earlier high-risk models like o3. As such, GPT-4.1 is classified as having a lower risk profile in the context of safety governance.

To further address transparency concerns, OpenAI unveiled a new initiative called the Safety Evaluations Hub. The platform is designed to provide public visibility into internal model assessments and reinforce the company’s commitment to responsible AI development.

The GPT-4.1 launch comes as the AI arms race accelerates. On the same day, Google expanded its Gemini chatbot with GitHub integration, aiming to draw developers away from competing platforms like ChatGPT. Meanwhile, OpenAI is reportedly in advanced negotiations to acquire Windsurf, a prominent AI-powered code generation platform, in a deal valued at $3 billion. If finalized, the acquisition could significantly boost OpenAI’s developer-focused ecosystem.

As the AI landscape continues to evolve rapidly, OpenAI’s GPT-4.1 release signals a push toward more responsive and capable AI tools—while reigniting debates about transparency, competition, and the ethical obligations of tech giants leading the AI revolution.
