Dhaka, Bangladesh — February 28, 2026:
The arrival of the BYD Sealion 5 in Bangladesh signals more than the launch of a new SUV — it highlights a turning point in how the country may approach electric mobility. As infrastructure limitations continue to shape consumer decisions, the BYD Sealion 5 positions itself as a bridge between traditional fuel vehicles and full battery-electric models.
On 28 February, Chinese automaker BYD officially introduced the BYD Sealion 5 at International Convention City Bashundhara in Dhaka through its national distributor, CG Runner BD LTD. Marketed as the “Everyday SUV,” the BYD Sealion 5 was launched strategically ahead of Eid, a peak buying season.
The BYD Sealion 5 is powered by the brand’s DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid system, combining a 1,500cc high-efficiency engine with an electric motor. This setup delivers a combined driving range of up to 1,000 km — a figure designed to ease range anxiety in a country where charging stations remain limited.
For urban use, the BYD Sealion 5 offers up to 71 km of pure electric range, potentially covering daily commuting needs without consuming fuel. For longer trips, the hybrid system seamlessly shifts to combustion support. The SUV produces a combined maximum power of 156 kW and 300 N.m of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds.
These performance metrics place the BYD Sealion 5 competitively within Bangladesh’s upper-mid SUV segment, challenging conventional internal combustion rivals not only on efficiency but also on responsiveness.
The BYD Sealion 5 integrates seven airbags, an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, and BYD’s Blade Battery technology. A 12.8-inch infotainment display and panoramic sunroof aim to meet rising consumer expectations for technology-driven interiors.
Imtiaz Nawsher, Chief Marketing Officer of BYD Bangladesh, said, “BYD Sealion 5 represents a shift toward practical and intelligent mobility. Customers today are looking for efficiency, comfort, and long-term value in one complete package. With DM-i technology at its core, the Sealion 5 delivers electric-like driving for daily use while ensuring freedom for longer journeys. It is built for everyday life in Bangladesh—accessible, dependable, and future-ready.”
His comments reflect a broader shift in buyer priorities, where fuel economy, warranty coverage, and technological integration increasingly influence purchasing decisions.
The BYD Sealion 5 is priced at BDT 47.90 lakh for the first 500 customers. The warranty package includes eight years or 160,000 km for the traction battery, eight years or 150,000 km for the motor, and six years or 150,000 km for the vehicle — a structure intended to build long-term confidence in hybrid technology.
At the launch event, 25 pre-ordered units of the BYD Sealion 5 were handed over to customers, signaling early market traction.
Fahmid Ferdous, Head of Sales of BYD Bangladesh, said, “The BYD Sealion 5 brings together efficiency, cutting-edge technology, and bold design, making it a fan-favorite in this segment. This was made evident by the fact that we got many pre-orders for this model even before the launch, and we expect many more orders based on the demand that we have observed.”
For Bangladesh, the introduction of the BYD Sealion 5 underscores a gradual, pragmatic path toward electrification. Rather than leap directly into full EV adoption, the market appears poised to embrace hybrid solutions that combine sustainability with flexibility.
Whether the BYD Sealion 5’s 1,000 km combined range becomes a transformative benchmark or primarily a reassurance against infrastructure gaps will depend on policy support, charging expansion, and consumer education. For now, the BYD Sealion 5 represents a calculated step in Bangladesh’s evolving automotive landscape — one that blends ambition with practicality.
