More than 2.5 million users have pledged to boycott ChatGPT following a controversial agreement between OpenAI and the U.S. Department of Defense, igniting one of the largest public backlashes yet against a consumer-facing artificial intelligence platform.
Though ChatGPT’s global user base exceeds 900 million, the scale and speed of the boycott signal a deeper unease about how AI companies navigate defense partnerships. A website tracking the protest campaign reports millions of pledge commitments, alongside spikes in social media activism and app uninstalls.
The commercial ripple effects were immediate. Reporting from TechCrunch, citing analytics firm Sensor Tower, showed U.S. mobile uninstalls of ChatGPT surging 295 percent in a single day after news of the Pentagon deal surfaced.
Meanwhile, competitors seized the moment. Claude, developed by Anthropic, climbed to the top of Apple’s App Store rankings, overtaking ChatGPT in downloads. The shift suggests that ethical positioning is becoming a tangible market differentiator in the AI sector, not merely a branding exercise.
Anthropic had previously withdrawn from Pentagon-related negotiations over concerns its AI could be adapted for domestic surveillance—an application it said conflicted with its democratic commitments. OpenAI’s decision to proceed with its agreement intensified comparisons between the two companies’ approaches to defense collaboration.
Sam Altman acknowledged that OpenAI mishandled the announcement, writing that the rollout was rushed and poorly communicated. He conceded that the complexity of defense partnerships demands clearer public explanation and stronger guardrails.
