HSINCHU, Taiwan – July 6, 2025:

The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) is stepping up efforts to position Taiwan at the forefront of 6G innovation by forging strategic global partnerships with the European Union and the United Kingdom.

Leading a high-profile delegation of representatives from Taiwan’s government, academia, and industry, ITRI participated in the 2025 EuCNC & 6G Summit, the EU’s premier event focused on next-generation communication technologies. Alongside the summit, ITRI co-hosted the UK-Taiwan Workshop on 6G Technologies and Future Networks at the University of Cambridge in collaboration with the UK Federated Telecoms Hubs (UK FTH) and the UK Telecoms Innovation Network (UKTIN).

The workshop brought together leading voices in telecommunications, including the UK’s Department for Science, Innovation & Technology (DSIT), BT Group, and major Taiwanese players such as MediaTek, Compal, and YTTEK. Discussions focused on strategic areas such as non-terrestrial networks (NTN), AI-native networks, Open RAN, integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS).

“Openness has been a core value since the 5G era,” said Pang-An Ting, ITRI Vice President and Director General of Information and Communications Research Laboratories. “We’re building Taiwan’s first 6G experimental network and invite international partners to join us in testing and validating 6G core technologies.”

UK Deputy Director Catherine Page emphasized the importance of international collaboration in advancing next-generation networks and praised Taiwan as a key partner in Open RAN and semiconductor innovation. Professor Harald Haas of the University of Cambridge also highlighted the complementary strengths of UK R&D and Taiwan’s ICT supply chain.

The workshop concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to deepening cooperation through joint testing platforms, knowledge exchange, and long-term R&D.

At the EuCNC Summit, ITRI signed MoUs with the EU's 6G-SENSES project and Dutch R&D organization TNO, focusing on the joint verification of ISAC and RIS technologies and global standard alignment. In addition, ITRI announced a trilateral collaboration with Germany’s Fraunhofer IPT and YTTEK to develop an intelligent metaverse manufacturing solution, which will be validated in Fraunhofer’s facilities.

Taiwan’s 6G delegation featured representatives from the Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT), National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), TAICS, and major tech companies and universities including MediaTek, BenQ Materials, NTUST, and NTHU. ITRI also showcased its FORMOSA 6G initiative, which includes a 6G trial network set to launch in Hsinchu by year-end.

Founded in 1973, ITRI has played a critical role in Taiwan’s transition to a high-tech economy. Through its 2035 Technology Strategy and Roadmap, ITRI aims to drive innovation in smart living, healthcare, sustainability, and resilience — continuing its legacy of creating impactful technologies and global collaborations.
